 The MMBA
was launched in 1993 by two people that recognized the fun and growth in the
sport of mountain biking. The original name for the organization was the Maine
Off Road Bicycle Points series. Prior to 1993, there were a handful of
independent mountain bike races in Maine, but no organized points series was in
existence. Thanks to the foresight of two people, that changed in
1993. The first points series in
1993 existed of four races: Spring Run Off in Camden; Widowmaker Challenge at
Sugarloaf USA; Black Mountain in Rumford; and the finals held in Orono, Maine.
The series has evolved and changed over the years with the addition of new
races that have come and gone, some remaining part of the series since its
inception. For the last few years, the Maine series has been a points series
that included eight races located throughout the state of Maine.
From 1993 to 2004, the series was
sanctioned through the National Off Road Bicycle Association (NORBA), but a
decision was made to embark on a new direction and affiliate with EFTA for the
2005 season. EFTA is a non-profit organization that promotes and sanctions
mountain bike races and recreational bicycle rides throughout New England. EFTA
requires at least half of the profits from each race to be donated to a
charitable organization of each race promoter's choice. The MMBA is very
excited about this new affiliation.. |
